Ali and Kirsten push doubles specialists to the brink

Ali entered the doubles draw at the US Open together with Kirsten Flipkens. They faced Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, the winners of this year’s Australian Open. Ali and Kirsten were able to make it very difficult for the second seeds. Nevertheless the match was decided in two sets as Ali and Kirsten lost 4-6 5-7.

Both of them had started brightly, each winning their first two servicegames. This meant they were in the lead four times. At 4-3 however, Babos and Mladenovic shifted into another gear. They won five games in a row. This meant that after winning the first set, they also enjoyed an early lead in the second.

It looked like the favourites would not spend so much energy in the second set. At a score of 1 games to 3, Babos’ backhand passing looked to be the decisive moment. Nothing was further from the truth. Alison saved two match points on her own serve and the Belgian girls came all the way back to tie the set at 5. Unfortunately they had to concede the next two games.
