Ali makes life difficult for world number 16 in first set yet bows out in Montreal

Alison has not been able to survive the second round at Montreal. She faced a strong opponent in Ashleigh Barty. Alison did really well though in the first set and even had set point. The momentum shifted after that, in Barty’s favour.

Just like in her match against Zhuk, Alison got off to a great start and was quickly leading 3-1. Unfortunately the break disappeared just as quickly. Barty immediately broke back. At 4-5, Ali faced set point. But Ali refused to give up, won the game and forced a tie-break. In the breaker, Ali had a setpoint at 6-5. She wasn’t able to convert. A couple of points later, Barty ran off with the first set.

That was the deciding moment in this match. Barty now kept on the pressure and won the first two games in the second set. However Alison did well to fight back and make it two games all. Her revival wouldn’t continue as Barty won the next four games. Alison eventually was beaten 6-7 (7/9) 2-6.
