Alison Van Uytvanck and Anna-Lena Friedsam are out of the women’s doubles in Hobart but did make life difficult for Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs in the quarter-finals. Alison and Anna-Lena eventually were beaten 7-6 (7/4) 2-6 8-10 after 1h28mins.
Mertens and Schuurs, both in the top 40 of the doubles ranking, started as favorites and took a 2-4 and 3-5 lead. Alison and Anna-Lena came all the way back to force a tiebreak. At 4-4 in the breaker Alison and Anna-Lena won the next three points to finish the first set.
Just like the first set, the second set was pretty even till 2-2. Then Mertens and Schuurs won four straight games to force a supertiebreak.
The first duo to win ten points would qualify for the semis and Mertens and Schuurs enjoyed a 1-5 lead. Alison and Anna-Lena then again showed their fighting spirit. At 4-8 the Belgian-German combination won four straight points to tie it at 8. The next two points were won by the opponents, hearby ending the match. Alison will now head for Melbourne to participate in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.
