Alison beats Ivanovic in thrilling three-setter

At the WTA-tournament in Luxembourg Alison (WTA-47) reached the quarterfinals. She knocked out second seed Ana Ivanovic (WTA-12) in three sets after a very strong performance.

Alison started the match well and immediately broke the Serbian in the first game. She stayed aggressive and at 4-2 she got a second break. Leading 5-2 Alison served for the set, but Ivanovic was able to break back. At 5-4 Ali got a second set to serve out the set and she was lucky at the third setpoint: 6-4.

In the second set Alison kept up the momentum. She continued to serve well and during her first three service games she did not lose any points. At 3-3 Ali managed to break her opponent’s serve, but was immediately broken back by Ivanovic. Ali kept the pressure high and got three breakpoints in the ninth game, but could not convert them. A tiebreak had to decide who would win the set and the Serbian won it 6-7(5).

While leading 2-1 in the third set, Alison got a first opportunity to take a lead. However she could not convert any of the three breakpoints. The Belgian kept playing some amazing points but could not convert a new break opportunity at 3-3. At 6-5 Ivanovic served for the second time to stay in the set, and this time Alison took the two break opportunities. She finished the thrilling match 7-5 in the third set.

In the quarterfinals Alison has to face the seventh seeded, Barbora Strycova (WTA-42). Both players already played each other twice, the Czech won their two previous encounters.
