Alison followed up her good showing at the Australian Open with a win over Belgian compatriot Kirsten Flipkens at St. Petersburg. Next up is Aryna Sabalenka, the world number ten.
Alison waisted little time to seize control in her first round match. She barely lost three points in the first four games as she raced towards a 4-0-lead. Alison was determined to wrap things up quickly in the first set and she did exactly that after just 30 minutes.
The second set was going to be a little thougher and it showed, despite getting an early break. Flipkens quickly tied things up and was up 4 games to 2 later in the set. Alison however never panicked and was just that little bit better than her opponent in all the next games. This helped her reach the second round after beating Flipkens 6-2 6-4.
In that second round, Alison faces Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. Sabalenka is the number four seed in St. Petersburg. Alison won their only previous encounter, last year in Mallorca.
