Alison produced a strong performance in the second round at Roland Garros. Unfortunately she was beaten 5-7 6-7 (5/7) in a tight match by Julia Goerges, ranked number eleven.
Alison trailed 1 game to 3 early on but immediately broke back. Ali kept Goerges at bay till deep in the first set. At 5-6, two excellent returns from Goerges in a row forced another break.
Alison enjoyed a great start in the second set and defended her 2-0-lead succesfully for a while. For most of the second set, Ali had the better statistics. She saved a break point to make it 5-3. Goerges smacked her racket in frustration and took another one. The German player should have received a warning for this and Alison made that clear to the umpire.
A bit later Alison served for the set but lost her servicegame to love. Alison led 3-1 and 4-2 in the tiebreak but Goerges came back again. A forehand winner set up match point and another acceleration from the 11th seed in the next rally was too difficult to return. The loss is unfortunate but at least Alison can look back at a very strong performance.
