Alison (WTA-102) clearly enjoyed playing at the center court of the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. After she beat top 50 player Magdalena Rybarikova in the first round, she had eight match points against Andrea Petkovic (WTA-12) in round two. Unfortunately she could not take her chances and eventually lost in three sets.
Alison started her match pretty well. She broke her opponent immediately and took a 2-1 lead. She tried to force it a bit too much during the rallies, and Petkovic then took the lead 3-5. Ali, however, did not surrender and took again the lead in the rallies. She levelled to 5-5 and had break point opportunities in the next game. In a thriller tiebreak both players had setpoints, and the luck was on Ali’s side when she claimed it 9-7.
Petkovic took a toilet break after the first set and afterwards she immediately broke Alison’s serve. However, the lead was short-lived. The Belgian came again alongside but Petkovic broke again to make it 3-5. At 4-5 Petkovic had a chance to serve out the set, but she failed. At 6-5 all the pressure was on the shoulders of the German. Ali gathered eight break points which were also match points, but Petkovic managed to erase them. Just like in the first set the tiebreak had to decide, and this time Petkovic took it.
The missed opportunities were clearly still in Alison’s head in the third set. She wanted to finish the points too quickly and made too many mistakes. The German took a 0-4 lead, Alison managed to come back until 2-4, but at 2-5 Petkovic had first match points. The third one after three hours and nineteen minutes was fatal for Alison: 2-6.
Today Alison plays the quarterfinals in the doubles tournament with An-Sophie Mestach. They play against second seeds Michaella Krajicek (WTAD-25) and Monica Niculescu (WTAD-44). It is the second match of the night session.
