Alison unfortunately did not get past the first round of the Australian Open. Petra Martic (WTA-81) beat Alison 6-7 (4/7) 3-6.
Alison immediately put pressure on Martic’ serve and forced three breakpoints. Martic survived the opening game and then raced towards a 1-4 lead. Alison won the next three games to tie it at 4-4. In the final games of the first set both players were pretty even, which led to the tiebreak. Alison quickly trailed 1-5 in the breaker but then won the next three points. Her Croatian opponent got two setpoints however. Martic finished the set at the net.
Martic asked for a medical time-out to get treatment on her shoulder. It didn’t seem to bother her too much. The first part of the second set, which had started with four consecutive breaks, again was pretty even. In the seventh game Alison was up 30-0. The next nine points all went to Martic. Being down 3-5 and facing matchpoint, Ali’s backhand error sadly ended her hopes of a deep run in the singles tournament. Alison will still play the women’s doubles in Melbourne with Anna-Lena Friedsam as her doubles partner.
