Alison loses to Friedsam in three sets

Alison came very close to qualifying for the second round at the Hobart International. After 2h22mins she was beaten by Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 4-6.

Despite not being in the top 500, Friedsam (WTA-509) was a tough opponent. The German is a former top 50-player. But Alison enjoyed the best start. She was the first player to win two games in a row. Alison went on to serve out the first set.

Friedsam wanted to set things straight and immediately took an 0-3 lead in the second set. Van Uytvanck then made a big run, winning four straight games. Then Friedsam won the next two. At 4-5 Alison saved five setpoints in beautiful fashion. Two times she produced a forehand winner and three times she was able to finish at the net. A backhand winner longline gave Alison the game. In the tie-break Alison took a 2-0 lead but again faced setpoints at 4-6. This time Alison’s forehand went long.

Friedsam realised the only break of the final set through a backhand passing at 2-2. Friedsam later saved Alison’s two breakpoints, leaving no hope for a comeback. Alison’s singles tournament ended in the first round of the main draw but she’s also playing doubles with no one other than Anna-Lena Friedsam at her side. The Belgian-German duo will be playing Duque Marino and Kalashnikova in the first round.
