Alison (WTA-43) had no easy opponent at the first round of the Australian Open. She had to face right away the fourteenth seed, Victoria Azarenka (WTA-16). The Belarusian is one of the favorites for the title after her victory in Brisbane last week.
The Belgian knew from last year what it meant to face a favorite for the title. Last year she had to play against Serena Williams at the first grand slam tournament of the year.
Azarenka started the match very well. She won 91% of the points on her first serve and only hit three unforced errors in the first set. Ali failed to win more than three points on her opponent’s serve and was broken herself three times: 0-6.
Alison was not able to turn the tide in the second set. A toilet break did not help much, she only hit one winner and could not win a single game. After 53 minutes, the singles tournament was over for Ali.
Tomorrow Ali plays her first round doubles match together with Yanina Wickmayer.
