Despite beating Smitkova, Alison will not be playing in the quarters at Lugano. Ali lost in the second round to French player Fiona Ferro in a close match 4-6 5-7.
Clay-court is Ferro’s favorite surface and it showed. It was Alison who was able to get the first break but she immediately had to face a rebreak. Afterwards, there were a lot of hard-fougth games in which both players were pretty even. When Alison had to serve to stay into the set, Ferro was able to pounce. Alison did well to save two set points but third time was a charm for her opponent.
Even in the second set, there wasn’t a whole lot between the two players. Alison kept trying to force a turnaround. At 2-2, she had three break points but couldn’t convert any of them. This was a bitter pill to swallow, certainly because Ali was facing a 3-5-deficit later on. Her fighting spirit helped her to tie the set at 5 but another break sadly gave Ferro the win.
